Cheektowaga Police arrest their own officer on DWI charges

CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (WIVB) -- Police in Cheektowaga say they arrested one of their own officers on a charge of aggravated DWI.

Law enforcement officers say Nicholas Jakubowski, 29, was off-duty during the alleged Feb. 23 incident.

Jakubowski's car was hit by another vehicle while he was turning into a parking lot of the Bellevue Hotel on Como Park Boulevard, according to police.

The person in the other car suffered a minor injury to their foot, according to authorities.

Jakubowski's blood alcohol content was allegedly more than twice the legal limit at the time. A reading determined it to be .19 percent, according to officers.

Jakubowski has been with the department for six years. Under the police union agreement, he was suspended with pay and will appear in court on March 9.

The officer also faces a lesser DWI charge and is accused of failing to yield.
