A volunteer girls basketball coach at the YMCA who faced seven years in prison for sending sexually explicit messages to a minor was sentenced to probation and will have to register as a sex offender.
Francesco Maccarrone was sentenced Thursday in state Supreme Court on convictions of endangering the welfare of a child and sending indecent material to minors.
Maccarrone started an online relationship with a 13-year-old girl in Buffalo, and was caught in Dec. 2018 when the girl told her family.
Prosecutors said Maccarrone had coached the victim for about three years, but didn’t know the minor he sent the inappropriate messages to was his player, because they created a front online account and communicated with Maccarrone through that.
The YMCA stated that Maccarrone was volunteer at the Southtowns branch on Southwestern Boulevard.
