Deputies: Kids stole vehicle from Hillside in Seneca Co., went on 140-mile joy ride before crash

VARICK, NY (WROC) - - Two kids at the Hillside Children's Center in Seneca County were arrested after deputies say they stole a vehicle from the campus and later crashed it on the Thruway, more than 100 miles away.

The minors, ages 12 and 13, were not identified by deputies. The sheriff's office reports they were called to the children's center in Varick on Halloween night at 10:45 p.m. after the two children were able to get the keys to the vehicle and drive off.

Deputies responded to the Border City area, after the vehicle was spotted there, but a search turned up nothing. Hours later, around 2:30 a.m., deputies say the two suspects were involved in a crash near Exit 29 on the Thruway -- about 140 miles away.

The minors were treated at St. Mary's Hospital in Canajoharie for minor injuries. The juveniles were charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and are set to appear in family court.
