SODUS, NY (WROC) – The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday that they have found skeletal remains believed to be missing 14-month-old Owen Hidalgo-Calderon.
A missing person alert was issued for Owen and his mother, 18-year-old Selena, back in May. Several days after the alert went out, Selena Hidalgo-Calderon was found wrapped in plastic in a wooded area near a farm where she worked on Joy Road in Sodus. An extensive search went on for weeks, but search crews did not find Owen at that time.
Tuesday, deputies said they have recovered remains from a shallow grave, not far from where Selena was found dead. They are still working to make a positive identification.
In May, using trail cameras, deputies said they spotted Selena’s boyfriend, Everardo Donoteo-Reyes, walking in and out of the same woods with a shovel.
He has been charged with tampering evidence; Reyes told investigators that he moved Selena’s body and buried it, but did not admit to killing her. Reyes has also been charged for entering the country illegally. He has been deported twice before.
Selena’s family said she reached out for help in February, in an attempt to get out of a domestic violence situation involving her boyfriend.
In a Facebook post, Estela Calderon posted a photo of Baby Owen and wrote in Spanish: “You were an angel of our life for us and for other people who heard you without knowing you… I know you would be happy now that your life has been taken away and that in that place with your mother, you help us give a little comfort our dear OWEN ZAIDEN.”
In a statement, the Workers’ Center of Central NY, who has represented the family of Selena and Owen, wrote: “We are saddened by the Wayne County Sheriff’s news about remains found at the Joy Road Farm… Since little Owen’s disappearance we have been holding hope that he would be found safe and return to his loving family.”
