Fire breaks out at Board of Elections, disrupts some Sheriff’s Office functions

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Firefighters quickly responded to a fire that broke out at the Board of Elections building on W. Eagle St.

County Executive Mark Poloncarz addressed the media following the fire. According to Poloncarz, everyone made it out safely.

It is not clear how much damage the fire did, but authorities say it was electrical in nature. A badly burned couch could be seen on the street outside of the building.

The building is shared with the Erie County Sheriff’s Office. Erie County Board of Elections is located on the 3rd floor.

The Board says that they will be setting up basic operations on the Rath building’s 14th floor for the time being.

The Erie County Sheriff’s Office says their Civil Division processing center and Finger Print Bureau at the Eagle St. location will be closed for a few days as engineers and contractors inspect the building.

Anyone with civil payments due during that time period will not be adversely affected by the closure, deputies say. Payments will be due when the building reopens. For the time being, those seeking fingerprints can call 858-6566 to reschedule appointments.
