The phone lines were lighting up at the Girl Scouts of WNY’s Buffalo Service Center Wednesday morning, as the annual Join-a-thon campaign got underway.
Phone lines are open from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m., with volunteers standing by to take on the spot registrations for girls ages 5-17 and for adult volunteers.

New registrants are eligible for Join-a-thon prizes, including exclusive Join-a-thon patches and a chance to win everything from a $150 Amazon gift card to a year’s supply of Girl Scout cookies.
Of course, the Girl Scouts are known for their cookie sales – It’s the largest girl-run business in the world, and it’s all about teaching young women entrepreneurial skills.
But the organization offers a lot more than that, with exciting programming year round that covers everything from camping to coding skills.
“The benefits are endless with joining Girl Scouts,” said Morgan Williams-Bryant, the Senior Vice President of Community Engagement & Member Services for the Girl Scouts of Western New York. “Our mission is building girls of courage, confidence, and character to make the world a better place. We have over a hundred years of history where we’re the pre-eminent girls leadership program across the world.”
The stats back that up.
Girl Scouts reps say 50 percent of female business leaders grew up in the Girl Scouts organization.
More than 70 percent of current female US Senators are former members, and that number is growing.
“Very excitingly, last week on Election Day, 58 percent of all women elected into Congress, which was a record number, were all former Girl Scouts,” said Alison Wilcox, the Girl Scouts of WNY’s C.O.O.
11-year-old Jaylah Bell seems like she’s on track to join the ranks of those U.S. leaders.
The Girl Scouts Cadette recently spearheaded a campaign to block a liquor store from opening near her home, and she credits the Girl Scouts for helping give her the skills to do that.
“I feel very, very proud of myself, and I feel like I have accomplished something very big,” Bell told News 4.
If that sounds like something you’d like for the girl in your life, or you’d like to get involved as an adult volunteer, you can call 1.888.837.6410 or go to www.gswny.org for more information.
