A Sodus man is lucky to be alive after driving his ATV onto the ice and then falling through.
The scary scene played out two days ago on Sodus Bay.
Authorities say the man had driven onto the lake, which he thought was completely frozen, to go ice fishing.
That’s when the ice gave way and he went in.
He was able to get out on his own, but a rescue team was on standby.
Matt Sauers with the Rochester Fire Department says “People aren’t really aware of the depth of ice. They’re out there. It starts to break free. It may break when we are coming after them.”
Authorities in the Rochester area say they respond to many water rescue calls during the winter, including some in the Genesee River.
Crews say they responded to 200 river rescues last year.
