Investigation reveals powder sent to Senator Gallivan came from Erie County prison

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Authorities who conducted an investigation into suspicious white powder sent to a western New York-based New York State Senator revealed the letter containing the powder originated from an Erie County Prison.

Officials have been investigating the unidentified white powder sent to Senator Patrick Gallivan’s office since Monday when a staffer noticed it inside an envelope. Gallivan was not at the office at the time, and police quickly learned the powder was inert.

Police also took issue with a threat written on a note, and began investigating the source of the letter, learning a person at the Wende Correctional Facility, a maximum security prison in Alden, sent the letter.

The identity of the person who sent the letter is still not known, but police continue to actively investigate with their partners.
