Prior to Sunday’s AFC Divisional game between the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Chargers, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported tight end Rob Gronkowski “will strongly consider” retirement after the season comes to an end.

There was speculation the future Hall of Fame tight end would call it a career following the 2017 season, but he opted to return for 2018.

In their 41-28 win over the Chargers, the Amherst native only had one catch for 25 yards.  After the game, he was asked about the report and whether he’s leaning toward hanging up his cleats which led to a funny back and forth between him and a reporter.

Reporter: “Gronk, along those lines, it’s possible in air quotes, that this is your last game in Gillette Stadium.  Could you speak to the possibility of that. Did you take a look around after the game, before the game, during the game to soak it in?”

Gronkowski: “I was focused on LA the whole game. It’s going to be the same thing this week. I’m all in right now. We got the Kansas City Chiefs now. It’s going to be another week of preparation.  And, I haven’t thought about anything like that. So, just gotta go all in.  Keep on focusing and keep doing what what we gotta to do. And, I gotta keep on doing what I’ve gotta do to help this team out to win next week.”

Reporter: “So the game is over and you haven’t started preparing for next week yet. So, what are your thoughts right now about that?”

Gronkowski: “My thoughts about it right now? That I’m going to have to enjoy the win. That’s what we do.  You get one night to enjoy the win actually around here. You do. You get one night.  And then, when you wake up tomorrow morning then it’s on to Kansas City. So, you get a couple hours so I’ll be doing that.  Then I’ll be thinking about next week.”

The full exchange starts at 2:40 in the Patriots’ clip below.
