Jamestown Police warn of scam involving false prize winnings

News

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. (WIVB) — Waves of calls from people claiming to be with the IRS plagued western New Yorkers’ phone lines for months, and now, Jamestown police are warning locals of another scam.

Over a course of several weeks, police say an elderly victim was tricked by people who said they were with Publishers Clearing House. The people, who called from a Jamaica area code (876), convinced the victim to send money to different locations to cover taxes and fees on cash and prizes they said she would receive.

Along with phone calls, the criminals also contacted the victim about winnings through mail — two things that Publishers Clearing House never does.

Thousands of dollars were sent to different locations.

Jamestown Police say that anyone looking for money or personal information to be sent out in this type of scenario is probably part of a scam.
