(WSYR-TV) — The Utica Zoo announced that Wednesday morning the peacock named Merlin flew into the African Lion habitat and was killed by one of the lions.

Merlin came to the zoo around 2006 and spent most of his time roaming around the zoo. He was often seen by the gift shop or relaxing in the bamboo gardens.

No visitors, staff, or general public were in harm’s way during the incident.
