The 12th Annual Labatt Blue Pond hockey tournament returns to Riverworks.
The winter event has become a staple for hockey players and their fans.
More than 900 people will be lacing up their skates and taking to the ice this weekend
Mark Kuntz is celebrating 10 years of hockey with his team, “The Queen City Squirrels.”
He said, “We consider this our home ice, Riverworks. The beers are flowing, so we’ll say, that’s right up there with hockey.”
Known around town as one of the most “spirited” in the league, this is their superbowl weekend.
Kuntz said, “Our families all come cheer us on. They sit up in the raftors, so it’s fun. Yeah, we want to win, we are competitive, but at the end of the day it’s just getting together with family and friends and coming out and skating.”
Event leadesr want to show you there’s something for everyone.
Lauren Christopher with Labatt Blue said, “There’s food, drink, live music. “There’s a celly-on photo booth, we have Sabres alumni appearances, so there’s a lot of fun going on throughout the weekend.”
Teams play a minimum of three round-robin games, and winners will be named tournament champions in their respective divisions.
Christopher said, “We love to celebrate the love of the game, so a lot of these guys grew up on the pond lacing up their skates with their buddies and for us, this is a way to bring that to life.”
