3-on-3 basketball tournament returns to WNY

Local News

A basketball tradition is returning to Western New York, but with a new name.  It’s no longer the well-known Gus Macker basketball tournament.

A new company is bringing the popular 3-on-3 basketball tournament back to Grand Island. This tournament isn’t affiliated with the Gus Macker games. It’s called the 3-on-3 WNY tournament.

The last time Grand Island hosted a 3-on-3 basketball tournament was back in 2017, with the Gus Macker games. The tournament used to be in Buffalo years ago but was moved to Grand Island in 2014. Organizers say they couldn’t register with Gus Macker to use the name, but they still wanted to bring back the popular event.

This 3-on-3 WNY tournament is similar as each team will have 4 players. This year, the games will be held right in the Town Commons off Whitehaven Road, so no roads will be closed.  Dan Derosiers, one of the organizers, says it’s a boost for Grand Island.

“Grand Island is a beautiful area, it brings to them economic structure, it brings to them a little bit more attention as well. They’ve got a lot going on in Grand Island right now,” said Dan Desrosiers, organizer.

There will also be food and other vendors. There are different divisions for all ages. Teams have until June 22nd to register. You can register here.

The tournament is July 6th on Grand Island starting at 9 a.m.
