BUFFALO, NY (WIVB) Orleans County prosecutors have charged 27 year old James White of Lockport with Manslaughter. They believe he sold the fatal dose of heroin that killed 22 year old Wade Sargent of Medina in March of 2017.
"This is clearly an epidemic," said Orleans County District Attorney Joseph Cardone. "It's an assault upon our society and that's how we're viewing it and we;regoing to do everything we can to eradicate it."
Cardone says it took this long for an arrest, because not only did forensic investigators try to match cell phone messages from the seller to the buyer, but it also took many months for toxicology results and DNA testing on the packages the drugs were in. "It's that combination of things that we feel makes this a strong enough case for the arrest of Mr. White."
News 4 reached Michael Sargent, the father of the young man who died. He gave us this statement;
"I would like to thank Joseph Cardone and law enforcement officials who through their tireless efforts and due diligence have removed another drug dealer from the streets. It brings my family closure knowing that this individual will never contribute to the the destruction of another life. Justice is being served. Thanks to all involved for the efforts to combat this terrible epidemic."
James White is being held on $100,000 bail in the Orleans County Jail and is due back in Shelby Town Court Thursday evening at 6 p.m.
Wade Sargent was one of eight fatal overdoses in orleans County in 2017. There were ten such deaths in Orleans County last year.
