Police in the Orleans County Village of Albion say a hacker in Croatia hijacked the Facebook account of a student and posted a threat to an unspecified school.

Investigators say the threat is not credible, however they will have an increased presance in Albion Central Schools on Monday.

Albion Police Chief Roland Nenni said he believes the hacker first got into the student’s account a few weeks ago. Even though the student changed his password, the hacker was still able to get back into the account and posted the threat against a school on Saturday.

Nenni said the FBI determined the account was likely taken over through a malware attack on a phone.

“This was one of those things where the malware might have come from an online game that he might have been playing on his phone or an email,” Chief Nenni said. “Who really knows?”

Nenni said this is something that could happen to anyone, so people should constantly monitor their social media accounts.
