Baron earns summer league shot with Pistons

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – After a season overseas, former Canisius star Billy Baron is back in the states trying to earn his way to the NBA.

Baron will suit up for the Detroit Pistons in the NBA Summer League in Orlando next month, giving him a chance to impress scouts with how much he’s improved over the last year.

“I’m more equipped for a longer season now, having gone through it… Playing within a team offense, team defense, definitely improved myself,” said Baron.

He was a one-man show for the Griffs in college with the entire offense running through him at all times. With a much different style of play in Lithuania, though, Baron had to adapt.

“There’s no one-on-one, there’s no isolation, you have to learn to play within the plays, play within the offense. If you don’t do that, you’re going to sit on the bench. You have to figure out your niche over there…You got to really just make yourself valuable to them and make them play you,” said Baron.

Now, he’s trying to make NBA teams give him a spot.

Baron is in town this week to host a basketball clinic at Sweet Home Middle School from 9am-1pm on both Saturday and Sunday. The camp costs $125 and is open to boys and girls ages 10-17.
