BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Before he was a radio host, David Bellavia was an army staff sergeant.
He was initially awarded the Silver Star and will now receive the Medal of Honor.
Making him the first living Iraq War veteran to receive the honor.
Bellavia, who ran for the Republican primary back in 2012, is currently a host on WBEN Radio.
He's expected to receive the Medal of Honor from President Trump at the White House later this month.
The Western New Yorker is the first living recipient of the honor for his role during operation Iraqi freedom.
Back in 2004, while serving as squad leader, then Staff Sergeant Bellavia saved an entire squad.
Bellavia spoke to his coworkers at WBEN. He says he's grateful to his unit.
"We're right back there and now I'm talking to all of the guys and the families of those we lost and to me it gives a lot of credibility to our unit 22 infantry and the first infantry division. I've just been really blessed served with guys who are taking this as, this award is our award," Bellavia said.
