ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WIVB) - After Monday night, no other Bills player will wear Thurman Thomas' number, 34. It's being retired at halftime of the Bills game against the Patriots at New Era Field.
But, starting Monday morning, you'll be seeing more Bills fans wearing number 34 around town.
New Era Cap released a few limited-edition Thurman Thomas-inspired caps and knit hats, almost exclusively at New Era Field Monday.
"It's very exciting because this is a once in a lifetime chance to get these hats," said South Buffalo resident Christopher Ferris. "I'm probably going to buy some to put away and then buy some to wear."
Ferris was in line outside the Bills Store at New Era Field hours before it opened Monday morning.
He wanted to be first in the door to get the new caps on day of their grand release.
New Era Cap says the Thurman Thomas collection is only available at the New Era Fan Wagon, the Bills’ stores at the 50-yard line and the east end zone as well as in the Bills Team Store.
Limited quantities will be available online.
New Era released three designs for the cap, in red, white, or blue, and one design for the knit hat.
"The white one is a very unique hat, especially the brim of the hat, just the accolades of his achievements on there is very neat," Ferris told News 4.
The new caps are just some of the hype surrounding the first Monday Night Football game in Orchard Park in nearly a decade.
As day broke over the New Era Field, the RV lot was already mostly full, and fans were starting their pre-game traditions.
"We've got to get the food ready, get the beer cold and get rocking," said Bill Polanksi, a Cheektowaga resident who was setting up his RV space first thing Monday morning.
"We've got some breakfast here ready to cook. We've got three grills, a smoker ready to go. Just ready to tailgate," added Buffalo resident Dominic DiCioccio.
Everyone going to Monday night's game is encouraged to arrive early.
The Bills tweeted Friday that the first 60,000 fans through the gates will get Thurman Thomas jersey towels.
Gates open at 6:45 p.m.
The game starts at 8:15.
