BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A Buffalo man has been sentenced for embezzling more than $28,000 from his aunt and her husband.
James Jones III, 31, of Buffalo, was sentenced to nine months for third degree grand larceny, which he pleaded guilty to in June 2018.
According to the Erie County DA"s Office, in June 2015, Jones was given $28,966 to invest on behalf of his aunt and her husband while working as an investment broker.
Jones never provided an update on the investment despite several requests by the victims.
A bank account was opened online in the name of the victim a month later, and a check in the same amount of the initial investment was deposited.
Wire transfers then moved the money into an account in Jones' name. Jones spent the money on gambling and personal items, according to the DA's Office.
Jones previously pleaded guilty to fourth degree grand larceny and second degree identity theft in two separate cases, and sentenced to five years of probation in both cases in March 2017.
The judge also issued a restitution order, which he will be required to pay back upon his release.
