Buffalo's Best High School Rivalry: Tonawanda vs. North Tonawanda

TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WIVB) - The winner of Buffalo's best high school rivalry is Tonawanda vs. North Tonawanda!

The rivalry dates back to 109 years ago. Tonawanda is hoping to end the 17 year losing streak at tonight's big game!

The Tonawanda Warriors are on a mission to beat the North Tonawanda Lumberjacks.

"I feel like it is one of the most anticipated games of the season," said Charles Cornman, Tonawanda High School Football Cornerback.

Tonawanda vs North Tonawanda or the TNT game, is as explosive as the name suggests.

For the past 17 years, North Tonawanda has been undefeated in the TNT matchup.

"NT is a bigger school they have more boys to pull from on their squads, just the luck of the draw sometimes," said Matt Cook, Tonawanda City Schools Athletic Director.

But win or lose, this tradition of friendly competition drums up a lot of support for both schools.

"Up in the stands there's a lot of energy all the time and we just always cheer them on no matter what the score is," said Alexis Verrall. Tonawanda High School senior.

"I just think the way the communities come together and the tradition, how long it's been going on you know and it's one of the earliest rivalries in the country," said Eric Jantzi, North Tonawanda hHead Football Coach.

In North Tonawanda students, players, and fans hope history will repeat itself this season with another win.

"Getting out on the field and winning for your school, there's no greater feeling," said James Holler, North Tonawanda High School Football Captain.

The big TNT game kicks off at Tonawanda High School's Clinton Small Stadium at 6 o'clock tonight.
