Oct. 23 7:11 a.m. – Buffalo Police say the contractor’s body has been found near Bird Island.

October 22, 6:42 p.m.

Buffalo Police and Fire say they’ve suspended the recovery operation on Bird Island and the investigation continues.

Thursday, October 22, 12 p.m.

A recovery effort is underway after a man fell into a well while working near the Buffalo Sewer Authority.

Rescue crews have been out since about 11 a.m., when the call for a water rescue first came in.

Officials say a private contractor for the Buffalo Sewer Authority fell into a well.

It’s unclear what he was doing when he fell.

We’re told well does lead to an intricate intake system.

Officials say he was not anchored in when he fell and, because it’s such a confined space, crews say it’s not an easy process trying to locate this man.

“There was a chance that the individual could have got snagged on something. He did have a rope which wasn’t anchored to anything, and he had a vest. No a life vest, but a vest. So it was a hope he could have gotten snagged on something as soon as he fell into the well, but unfortunately that doesn’t appear to be the case,” Buffalo Fire Commissioner Bill Renaldo said.

Officials say this is a contained site and there is no danger to people who happen to be walking through here. But police do have this area blocked off.

We’re told rescue crews will not be putting a boat on the water.
