BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A fire broke out Tuesday morning on a lower floor at 221 Norwalk Ave., just before 7:10 a.m. Fire officials tell News 4 two alarms were sounded.
Although the person who was inside the house made it out safely, five dogs and two cats were killed.
“They did make an attempt to go inside originally try to save some of the dogs that we’re in side but we were unsuccessful,” said Buffalo Fire Division Chief Daniel Bossi . “There were a lot of couches, furniture and debris so we had a difficult time making it through that first floor.”
As the fire continued to spread, Bossi says crews had to make the call to head back outside. “At that point it becomes our members safety and protecting the buildings next store.”
Officials say it began on the first floor and ascended to the second, causing $350,000 in damage to the house.
The adjacent houses on both sides each suffered $20,000 in exposure damage.
The cause is under investigation.
The American Red Cross is helping two people from the home, and three from the neighboring homes.
