Summer is just around the corner, and we know western New Yorkers will be flocking to our local hot dog stands.
But there’s one that people around here like above all the rest!
News 4’s Katie Alexander went to the Ted’s Hot Dogs location on Sheridan Dr. in Tonawanda. They’re the winner of Buffalo’s Best Hot Dog Stand.
See what makes Ted’s so special in the video above and watch our full Wake Up coverage below.
Ted’s has been serving up its famous hot dogs for more than 90 years, with the founder immigrating from Greece in the early 20th century and operating a horse-drawn hot dog cart until he upgraded to his first stand in 1927. That opened in a former tool shed left over from the construction of the Peace Bridge.
“It just goes to show that even though sometimes businesses can be tough to run, as long as you do things the right way, you can survive,” said Alan Shephard, the General Manager of the Sheridan Drive location.
Over the last nearly century, Ted’s has not just survived, it has thrived, growing to include nine locations in Western New York and one in Arizona. A second location in Arizona is in the works.
All of the Ted’s locations offer a pretty wide variety of menu items, including everything from veggie dogs to beef dogs, skinless hot dogs for kids, a fish fry on a bun, and several styles of hamburgers that can be topped with mac and cheese, bacon, and more.
But, the real star of the show is the classic Sahlen’s hot dog, grilled up on a hardwood charcoal grill and made to order.
“You know, one of the best things that I like is people come in and just the way they say it – It can be ‘Give me one with everything’ or ‘the works’ or ‘drag it through the garden’ or ‘run it around the block.’ Anything that they can come up with, it’s fantastic listening to the different things they say,” Shepard said.
The Sheridan Drive location alone serves up hundreds of thousands of those hot dogs every year. And, every year, people line up out the doors to get them for a special price in honor of Ted’s anniversary. This year, Ted’s offered hot dogs for 92 cents one day in honor of its 92nd year in business.
“We work hard every day and it shows,” Shephard pointed out. “We have a lot of regular guests that come in and a lot of new people and we’ve got a good mix and it’s the talk of the town.”
A lot of people are talking about Ted’s this week, and they voted in big numbers to name it Buffalo’s Best hot dog stand.
