A man was taken by helicopter to a Buffalo hospital after a crash overnight that closed a stretch of Route 78 in Niagara County.
Deputies said that a Volkswagen Beetle which just before 3 a.m. sped away from a sheriff’s patrol on Lockport-Olcott Road then left the road and crashed in Newfane.
Deputies said the car left the roadway on a curve, then his a tree and several vehicles at a residence before coming to a stop against the garage.
The driver, identified as 41-year-old Patrick Singleton, was pulled from the car by first responders. He was later charged with reckless driver, unlawful fleeing of a police officer, aggravated unlicensed operation, and other vehicle and traffic violations.
The road reopened shortly before 6:30 a.m. Tuesday.
