The Town of Clarence is marking this Memorial Day holiday with a brand new project honoring fallen service members.
The town broke ground Monday for the Clarence Veterans Memorial project. The Clarence Rotary Club is spearheading an effort to install a memorial in the Clarence Town Park.
The new veterans memorial will include a 16-foot fountain and a plaza with honor walls.
The Town of Clarence has a strong military background. Since the war of 1812, the town has lost 57 residents. This will be the first monument of its kind in the town.
“We have records of Clarence residents who have passed away all the way back from the war of 1812, and we have no monument in this town that permanently honors them and has their name set in stone,“ said Chrissy Casilio Bluhm project chair.
Organizers say they hope to have the memorial fountain ready next year.
