BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB)- Construction crews are working around the clock to keep UB’s new medical school on track to open in 2017.

It’s the university’s largest construction project ever; it’s also the largest medical education facility being built in the United States currently, and will house than 2,000 students and faculty.

“Over the summer, over the next six months, you’ll see the building emerge out of the ground,” said William Mahoney, Vice President at LP Ciminelli.

Mahoney told News 4 the next phase of steel to be installed will stretch over to Washington Street, and really begin to resemble a medical school.

The University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences is being built on top of the Allen Street Metro Station, which was recently closed due to the construction.

Once the project is complete, the station will re-open inside the school.

The facility is right across the street from Conventus Center For Collaborative Medicine. Kevin Thompson of the University at Buffalo told News 4 location is key to making the new school a success.

Buffalo General and Buffalo Women & Children’s hospitals are also blocks away from the new medical school.

“They can learn in the classroom or in the research lab, they can go over to clinic care and/or in patient care, and it means a lot for the medical school residents to have the ability to do that all in one place,” Thompson said.

But it’s not just location or size that makes the project state of the art.

“We did a mock up of the exterior of the building and we ran it through a number of tests for wind, air, and water infiltration,” Thompson told News 4.

UB’s new medical school will essentially be weather-proof, something those behind the project told News 4 is an important factor, especially in Western New York.

UB’s new medical school is located at Main and High Streets and is set to open in August 2017.
