AMHERST, N.Y. (WIVB) – A water main break occurred during a house fire in East Amherst Thursday morning.
Firefighters battled flames at a two-story home on Stonybrook Lane for about 40 minutes. The street and sidewalks in the area were flooded with water from the water main break.
A neighbor saw fire at the home and called firefighters around 10:30 a.m. Although no people were in the home, two dogs and a bird perished in the destructive fire. Officials say in addition to the loss of life, the fire destroyed $300,000 in contents and $300,000 in the structure of the home.
Officials say while dealing with extreme cold, the Williamsville School District brought in a bus which firefighters used to warm up in.
East Amherst Fire Department responded to the fire, but were assisted by Swomville Fire Department, Getzville Fire Department, Clarence Center Fire Department, Main Transit Fire Department and Snyder Fire Department.
