BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Across Western New York and the United States, Girl Scouts are going door-to-door making sweet sales.
Cookie season officially kicked off on Saturday.
And this year, local Girl Scouts have new tools to help them close more deals.
Digital Cookie is a groundbreaking addition to the Girl Scout Cookie Program that allows girls to put emarketing skills to work, inviting customers to purchase cookies through their online cookie businesses.
"You can send e-cards or emails to family or friends that out of town or you can't reach them door to door, so that makes it a little bit easier," said Darya Fakharzadeh, 11, a Girl Scout Junior in Troop 30079 of Buffalo.
Girls can also take in-person orders using a unique mobile app newly enhanced to allow for credit card processing and direct shipping.
However they make the sale, the Girl Scout Cookie program does a lot of good for local Girl Scout troops who decide how to use the money they raise, for US troops serving overseas who benefit from the Cookie Share program, and for the young women who are making the sales.
"You learn how to build more confidence in yourself and to learn what the outside world is really like," Fahkarzadeh said.
The Cookie Program is the Girl Scouts' signature financial literacy program, building skills from money management and business ethics to decision making, people skills, and goal setting.
Fahkarzadeh has set a very high goal for herself this year.
"To get a thousand boxes to go to summer camp this year," she said.
The 11-year-old is already off to a strong start, making some of her first sales of the season while our News 4 crew tagged along Sunday morning.
Cookies cost $4 per box for flavors including Girl Scout S'mores, Thin Mints, Caramel deLites, Peanut Butter Patties, Shortbread, Peanut Butter Sandwich, Lemonades, and Thanks-A-Lot. The new Gluten-free Caramel Chocolate Chip cookies cost $5 per box.
Other than the cost of cookies, all of the proceeds stay in Western New York supporting Girl Scout programs that help girls ages 5-17 develop important leadership skills.
The 2019 Girl Scout Cookie program in Western New York runs January 12 to March 31, 2019 and booth sales run March 3 to March 31, 2019
