NEW ALBION, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office says a man found an old military artillery shell while digging around his house.

On Wednesday, the Chautauqua County Regional Bomb Squad responded to the home on Route 353 in New Albion.

There, they secured the shell, which was three inches around and about 10 inches in length.

The team began an investigation with the U.S. Air Force Explosives Ordinance Disposal Team, who determined the shell was an inert practice round, and not dangerous.

Anyone who comes across any military ordinance, like an old grenade or artillery shell, should leave it undisturbed and call 911.
