BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A driver died in a crash at the edge of Martin Luther King, Jr. Park late Friday night.

Police were called to Fillmore Avenue and East Parade just before midnight, where they found the car had hit a tree, according to a Buffalo Police spokesperson.

Accident investigators determined the car was traveling at a high rate of speed, hit a pole and then hit the tree, police say.

The driver, Buffalo resident Rodney Cole, 50, died at the scene. A male passenger was brought to Erie County Medical Center for treatment; police describe his injuries as serious.
