BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Driver’s licenses for undocumented aliens have state lawmakers and New York state’s county clerks poised for a showdown.
Those in favor say it would make roads safer, as the undocumented persons would have to pass both written and road tests. Those against, including many county clerks, believe the people applying would get special treatment.
Erie County Clerk Michael Kearns said if an immigrant needs the license to get to work or school, there are legal ways of getting there. In the meantime, Kearns also claims the driver’s license could be a gateway ID to obtaining other legal forms of identification, such as Social Security numbers, applying for jobs, and credit.
