East side neighborhood wakes up to a piece of history

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Folks, like Christina Lincoln in the Hamlin Park neighborhood, said it’s like finding buried treasure, and it does seem to be that quite literally.

A city streets crew was milling down the old asphalt on Blaine Avenue, Thursday morning, the start of a repaving project, and to everyone’s surprise they uncovered the old brick pavement.

Word spread, and folks came out with their own yard tools and started digging up the old pavement themselves.

Now Lincoln said, they want to keep the brick road, just like residents did over on Ardmore Place, two years ago.

“It is kind of like unearthing treasure–like you found something special in the walls of your house, or something.”

Christina said it is a special thrill for some of the older residents on Blaine Avenue, “No one remembers when the streets were actually still brick. So it was kind of an exciting thing to see, and it brought back a lot of memories for some of my neighbors, too, when they remember some of the other streets that were brick in the area as well.”

Lincoln said, the brick pavement would be a perfect complement to the neighborhood. Hamlin Park is designated a landmark district.. and is on the State and National Register of Historic Places.

Hamlin Park residents are asking the mayor, who lives nearby, to save the asphalt, and keep the brick.
