(WIVB) — The Erie County Sheriff is warning locals of a phone scam that has resurfaced.

On Tuesday, the Sheriff’s Office received two complaints about a person representing them self as Sgt. Mason, with the Sheriff’s Office.

According to the complaints, the scammer has been telling people that there is a warrant for their arrest in relation to missing jury duty.

Because of this, the scammer then instructs the potential victim to buy a Green Dot card to pay a fine and avoid the warrant.

The Sheriff’s Office will not call people to request payments for fines or warrants, nor does the organization tell people to buy Green Dot cards of any other form of prepaid card.

Anyone who receives a call like this should just hang up.
