HAMBURG, N.Y. (WIVB) — Tee It Up for the Troops at Wanakah Country Club was a show of support on the links for soldiers and veterans.
David Bellavia, weeks after he was awarded the Medal of Honor, led Monday’s opening ceremonies.
“I don’t know what it is about the region, but I’m proud of it. I’m proud to be from it. Days like today when everyone is appreciated. So many generations came home and weren’t appreciated like we are today,” Bellavia said.
Holly Baker, whose son Sgt. Brian Baker died in Iraq in 2004 while serving in the U.S. Army, says events like today mean so much – the show of support. She had a nice moment with Bellavia, who has advocated for veterans and for young people to consider joining the military.
“I was very honored to meet him and i did see a little of my son in him because I’m very proud of David Bellavia for what he’s done and it’s an honor to have met David,” said Baker, a Gold Star Mother.
News 4’s Don Postles was the master of ceremonies. This is the third year for the event.
