BUFFALO, NY (WIVB) — Monday marks one year since three-year-old Maksym Sugorovskiy was killed in Delaware Park when a car went off the 198 and onto Ring Road. The family came together on Saturday to remember him.

A local business with the help of volunteers, unveiled a memorial garden in honor of Maksym. The garden pays tribute to him and his affection towards his sister Stephanie. The plant chosen for the memorial – has a very deep meaning behind it.

Amy Range, a family member, said, “A year ago, Makysm had given a flower to Stephanie, his sister. He could of given it to a lot of people, but he chose her, and it was a pink impatiens.”

People at the memorial event helped build the garden, plant by plant. The memorial also paid tribute to the affection Maksym showed his sister. “In honor of the love between Maksym and Stephanie, we all planted impatiens flowers.”, said Range.

Family members said Maksym gave the flower to Stephanie just three days before the accident.

Gerald Cantor, a family member, said, “He idolized her, and she was more or less… she was his charge. She looked at him and watched over him.”

The accident also severely injured Stephanie, leaving her in a coma. Because of her injuries, the family wasn’t able to keep up with their personal garden for some time. But, the same flower that Maksym gave to Stephanie – not only survived, it was thriving.

“Despite all of that when Mary went to show Stephanie the flower, there was a vibrant impatiens underneath it, so it became even more important, more special.”, said Range.

The land, and the materials were provided by Rigidized Metals, next door to the memorial in Buffalo’s Silo City.

Bob Sturm, one of the volunteers, said, “We just worked together as a team, and it was a really nice team to do a really wonderful project for really good people so how can you go wrong.”
