BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Former St. Joe’s star Dennis Gilbert is just days away from hearing his name called in this year’s NHL Draft.
The defenseman is ranked 58th among North American skaters, according to NHL Central Scouting, which should put him somewhere in the second or third round range this week. The ranking is up from 72nd, on the midterm list.
“All the credit goes to my teammates and my coaches,” said Gilbert. “I played on a lot of great teams growing up. Junior year winning states for St. Joe’s was the greatest hockey memory I’ve ever had. Great teammates and coaching staff there, then go to the junior Sabres for a year. Learned from coach Peca and all the vets on that team that are now playing college now for Canisius and Niagara and all around. That was a great year as well, then got to Chicago. Great teammates, great leadership core welcomed me in. It was really easy to adjust out there. It was my first year away from home and whatnot.”
The first round of the NHL Draft is this Friday in Sunrise, Florida, with the remainder of the draft beginning Saturday morning. News 4 Sports will have coverage from Florida beginning Wednesday night, with the top prospects taking part in batting practice with the Miami Marlins.
