Local legend will tell you that the hamburger was invented in Hamburg- and that the first burger was served at the Erie County Fair. 

Historian Chris Carosa says that there might be some merit to the story. 

The most popular story about the birth of the burger says the sandwich was created in 1885 when a group of brothers from Ohio ran out of ingredients for their pork sausage sandwich and used beef instead. 

“You have to look at the preponderance of evidence, and it really does suggest that the Menches brothers story is probably a true story,” Carosa said.
