Jamestown Police have suspect in case of dog found hanging from tree

Local News

Jamestown Police have made an arrest in the case of a dog found hanging from a tree in the city on Monday evening.

Robert Overton Jr., 47, was accused of felony aggravated cruelty to animals.

According to police and court documents, Overton hanged a family dog named “Champagne” from a tree in late November or early December.

The animal was seen by a person walking through the area of Hallock St. near Palmer St.

“One thing that’s difficult, why you would do something like this,” said Jamestown Police Captain Robert Samuelson. “I don’t think we’ll ever know that.”

In a signed confession to police, however, Overton claimed the  pitbull was “aggressive”. News 4 obtained the document after Overton was arraigned Thursday.

“I took her outside and walked down the street with her until I got to some brush,” Overton wrote. “I hung her on a tree banch.”

Dozens of tips were called in on this case. Jamestown Police have also received requests for monetary donations toward a reward or a donation toward an animals cause.

Police suggest that anyone who wants to donate money do it directly to their local SPCA or the Pick of the Littler animal shelter in Falconer, NY.
