Locally-made documentary sheds light on dangerous journey of underground railroad

Local News

A new film is providing the under-explored perspective of African-Americans making the dangerous journey from slave states to Canada and Freedom.

“Risking: Everything: A Story of Niagara’s Freedom Seekers” was produced by photographer, Isadore “Izzy Bleckman”.

He spent five decades as Charles Kuralt’s cameraman for the CBS’ series “On the Road” and “CBS Sunday Morning.”

“When I started working on this, it started to coalesce that it’s been on the back shelf somewhere. What happened to the people who came over here and found freedom in Canada? Where are they? What did they walk away from?” said Bleckman, who retired from CBS in the early 2002.

The documentary was filmed mostly in Lewiston, one of several border locations that were key to helping people cross the river.
