Man found dead in burning truck in Town of Tonawanda identified

Local News

Town of Tonawanda Police found a dead man inside a burning pick-up truck late Monday night.

Around 10:30 p.m., concerned neighbors called 911 to Wynnwood Avenue, two blocks west of Niagara Falls Boulevard, where the truck was on fire in the street.

“We heard a series of pops like a roman candle going off, heard about six pops in a row,” said neighbor Dennis Kociencki.

Fire crews weren’t able to put out the burning vehicle with a fire extinguisher, and needed the help of another fire engine.

“In a situation of this type it’s difficult to rule quickly and say with absolute certainty who that party is,” Lt. Thoms Haynes told News 4 Tuesday morning.

On Wednesday morning, the man was identified as 64-year-old Town of Tonawanda resident Robert House.

House served as a Brighton volunteer firefighter for more than 40 years, and retired from the New York State Thruway Authority.

Police do not suspect foul play in his death. At this time, it’s still unclear how the fire started.
