Maryvale Intermediate Students ‘Fill their Backpacks’

Local News

Thanks to your generosity, we have a good running start on our mission to “Fill the Backpack.”  More than 32-thousand pounds of food have already been collected.

News 4, Wegmans, FeedMore Western New York and Fidelis have joined together to ensure children across the region have nutritious meals. Maryvale Intermediate students are already benefiting from your donations.

“We’ll come in, get out bags, get the food and just walk out so happy that we have food,” said Maryvale Student, Eric Hayes.

More than 35-hundred kids across he region are benefiting from the Fill the Backpack campaign.  At Maryvale Intermediate they call it the Nutrition Club.  35 bags go out per week to kids who really need them.

“Kids love it. They come in with their passes, fill their backpack and head back to class.  They are really excited for Fridays,” said Sarah Koziol, a teacher at the school.

This week’s bag was filled with tuna, fruit cups, animal crackers, milk and mac n’ cheese.

Teachers say there was a serious need for the Fill the back pack program in their intermediate building.
“We had noticed that students were hungry throughout the day and a lot of students were eating breakfast at school,” said Koziol. And that the program is making an impact on student’s lives.  And the look on their faces says it all.

“It’s such joy and such gratitude for the community when you see the kids and their smiles, talking about what the program means to them, said FeedMore Western New York’s Communications Director, Catherine Shick.

If you want to help out kids at 52 schools across our region, you can donate at your local Wegmans through June 16th.
