A new cafe is serving up specialty drinks and food at Chestnut Ridge Park, in Orchard Park. There’s never been anything like it at the Casino inside the park.
“I personally feel like this is one of the most majestic places in all of Erie County,” Angela Kunz said, the owner of Grateful Grind.
On a clear day, from atop the sledding hill at Chestnut Ridge Park, there’s a stunning view of Downtown Buffalo. The Casino, which was built on that hill more than 80 years ago, allows people to congregate and escape the cold. At one point there was a hot dog and hamburger stand inside the casino, but a new cafe has brightened the space up.
“You can have something wonderful to eat or drink and just enjoy this space,” Kunz said.
Grateful Grind has colorful chairs, and allows visitors to enjoy the hand-painted murals inside the Casino. There are specialty drinks there as well. Kunz said they roast all their own coffee beans. And there’s a variety of food for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
“We’ve tried to offer clean, healthy alternatives,” Kunz said.
There’s a kids area as well, and even a service window, which is specially designed for dogs on weekends.
And you might recognize the name, Grateful Grind. Kunz moved her business from Main Street in Buffalo to Orchard Park at the end of 2018. Last year News 4 did a story on the cafe, and their emphasis on teaching young people with special needs how to cook and bake. Kunz said when they moved.
“We are still focusing on that,” Kunz said. “Right now we have one individual that works with us. Because of the location change, transportation was an issue for some of those folks that worked with us in the past, but it’s still part of our mission… and one of our main goals.”
This Friday, May 17, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Grateful Grind is having an official grand opening party.
The cafe is open from Tuesday-Thursday. The service window is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
