New details in apparent murder-suicide in Florida involving former WNY residents

(WIVB) - Authorities in Florida are still investigating what happened after two Western New York residents were found dead in an apparent murder-suicide in Sun City Center.

They both died of gunshot wounds.

Joseph Sutton, 74, and Karen Sutton, 73, were found dead in their home after a neighbor heard a gunshot and called police.

Joseph was a graduate turned long-time teacher in the Ken-Ton School District. Karen was a physical education teacher in the Hamburg Central School District.

Leaders with the district say Joseph Sutton worked as a physical education teacher and coached sports for decades. He taught at Franklin Middle School from 1970 to 1971, Kenmore West from 1971 to 1990, and back at Franklin Middle School from 1990 to 1998.

The couple lived in the bluffs in Derby for some time. They were "snowbirds", but kept in touch with friends in Western New York.

They lived in a tight-knit community in Sun City Center.

The sheriff's office in the Florida county says they have no record of any previous calls to the home.

The Hillsborough County Medical Examiner's Office says Karen suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the heart, lungs and liver, and Joseph's gunshot wound was to his head.

They have not released any further information, except that it's still under investigation.

The murder-suicide was the fifth in the Tampa Bay area in a five-day period.
