One of the largest privately-funded developments in recent years is set to open its doors this spring, and Thursday the developers offered local media a sneak peek.

It is called 500 Pearl, a vanity address that takes up most of the block at Pearl, Tupper, and Franklin streets. The Ellicott Development Company project offers luxury apartments, a hotel, and commercial space–a mix of new construction and historic restoration.

The new, massive 12-story complex adds 380,000 additional square feet of hotel, residential, and conference room space to the downtown landscape, not to mention the 380-car parking ramp that takes up 5 of the bottom six floors.

The Aloft Buffalo, a Marriott Hotel, offers luxury apartments and Sarah Bishop, the Director of Sales Development for Ellicott Hotels said those units have some big windows.

“To showcase that, we have floor-to-ceiling windows in the rooms. We have some that have one wall, we have some that have two, and then we actually have some that have three walls of the floor-to-ceiling windows.”

The 500 Pearl is actually two buildings–Ellicott Development bought the former Buffalo Christian Center which is adjacent to the new construction. When it is finished there will be a swimming pool, bowling alley, and the old Forbes Theatre is being restored.

The 500 Pearl and Aloft Hotel is Ellicott Hotels largest development.. and company Chief Executive Officer Bill Paladino said they want this to be a new downtown destination.

“Whether you are staying in a hotel room, whether you are coming to see a play, see a concert, having a daughter’s wedding, having a confirmation, having a corporate meeting, or you want to live here, it has something for everybody.”

Ellicott Hotels is aiming to open The Aloft Hotel sometime in March, the luxury apartments with one-to-three bedrooms, shortly after that.

Developers believe they have a prime location with downtown offices, the Theatre District, and the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus within walking distance.
