BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Thursday marks the 25th anniversary of the founding of Nexstar Media Group, Inc.

To mark the milestone, Nexstar stations across the country are giving back to their communities through Nexstar’s annual “Founder’s Day of Caring”.

News 4 Buffalo is spending Thursday and Friday volunteering at FeedMore WNY, packing bags of food for its “Backpack Program” and helping out in the Community Garden.

It sounds nice, and it is, but the reason FeedMore needs volunteers is due to need. The Coronavirus pandemic caused a lot of families to struggle with putting food on the table, and that need increased.

“So even though it feels like the pandemic is kind of coming to an end, unfortunately, some of the repercussions of what was going on are still going to be felt in the community, and so our services are going to continue to be essential to families and individuals in the area,” said Lauren Hibit of FeedMore WNY.

Chairman and CEO of Nexstar Media Group, Perry Sook, said the success of a company should be celebrated by giving back.

“We are a local service business. We serve our local communities with content and help advertisers sell things, so, the best we can do is give back to our communities as a thank you for how they help to make our company and build our company,” said Sook. “Founder’s Day is a commitment to every employee in the company that you can take up to half of a day paid time off to do service work in your community. It’s very locally oriented where the stations decide what charities or communities or nonprofits they want to support, form their own teams and then go do their service work. So, its a very bottoms up approach to say thank you to our local communities.”

FeedMore WNY makes sure that people in four counties across WNY has enough to eat – from kids to the elderly. News 4 has been helping the organization’s mission since 2017.

“We’ve been at this for a few years now, and unfortunately did miss last year, so we’re back, and it’s important whenever we can to give back to the community to support it and support and organization like FeedMore that does such amazing things in the WNY community,” said Daniel Jackson, Director of Sales at WIVB-TV.

Catherine Shick of FeedMore WNY says there are many opportunities for people to get involved.

“Helping us do a variety of projects, whether that’s sorting and packing food in our warehouse, delivering meals to our homebound neighbors through our Meals on Wheels programming, or helping us out at special events and in our offices,” she said.
