NFL Commissioner supports the idea of a new stadium for the Bills

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — It’s a conversation that’s been going on for several years in western New York — should the Bills get a new stadium?

Pegula Sports and Entertainment is doing a study on whether renovations or a whole new facility are the way to go.

The company asked season ticket holders for their thoughts in January.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell supports a new stadium. Monday, at Terry Hills Golf Course in Batavia, he told reporters that fans expect a higher quality stadium than they did 20 years ago.

He says stadiums are important to the franchise, and market challenges in Buffalo aren’t unlike the challenges faced by other cities.

“The reason why I’m supportive is because I want to make sure this franchise remains stable here and continues to remain competitive,” Goodell said. “And, I think it’s great for this community, and we’ve been able to do these stadiums in such a way that it creates a tremendous economic benefit, too…I want the Bills to be successful and I want them to continue to be competitive here in Buffalo.”

Goodell says the league is working with both the public and private sectors in ongoing conversations.

Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz says he’s not sure if Goodell’s interests are those of the people.

Poloncarz says a lot of the costs in other cities have trickled down to fans — something he doesn’t want to see here.
