The Niagara County Sheriff’s Office is warning about a new version of an old scam that has affected over 76,000 people in the county.
This variation of the “IRS phone scam” attempts to trick victims with a false caller ID, claiming the call is actually from the Dept. of Social Security, a post on the sheriff’s office Facebook says.
“With over 76,000 complaints across the county, and over $19 million stolen from unsuspecting victims, this new phone scam is proving to be a serious problem,” the post says.
Calls like this can be reported to the Social Security Administration Fraud hotline at 1-800-269-0271.
