TOWN OF NIAGARA, N.Y. (WIVB) — Amazon could have its eyes on a huge vacant lot near the Niagara Falls airport for the future home of a distribution center.

“It would significantly change the Town of Niagara, and it would significantly change the county of Niagara,” said town supervisor Lee Wallace. “It would by far dwarf any project we’ve ever had in our town.”

A proposed storage and distribution facility will be presented to the planning board meeting in April. According to Buffalo Business First, Amazon is behind the project.

Supervisor Wallace wasn’t able to confirm to News 4 if it will be an Amazon distribution center but says if it is, it would bring an economic boost to the town.

“At times we struggle with finances,” he said. “It would make a definite difference.”

The distribution facility would be located on Lockport Road, right near the airport. Wallace says it has the potential to be a “game-changer.”

“The project would definitely be something that would change the way we operate and change our town,” he said. “We’ve never had anything of this nature.”

There were plans to put a major Amazon facility on Grand Island, but they fell apart.

“When it didn’t work out at Grand Island, all I heard was why not us why not Niagara County? Why not Niagara Falls? This would be a big win for Niagara county,” said Niagara Falls councilmember Bill Kennedy. “Unemployment numbers drop, the economy flourishes, Niagara county flourishes, the tax base would obviously increase. It’s a big win.”

Amazon is not listed in the proposal, instead it states the developer of the project as JB2 Partners LLC, an Atlanta based company. They’re proposing to build an e-commerce storage and distribution facility next to the Niagara falls international airport and Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station.

Buffalo Business First is reporting the facility would be run by Amazon and could create at least 1,000 jobs.
