NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (WIVB) — A new study ranks a major tourist attraction right here at home at the bottom of the list for retirees.
Bankrate’s study ranked Niagara Falls as the number one worst city to retire.
The study looks at nine categories:
- cost of living
- healthcare costs
- healthcare quality
- cultural vitality
According to the study, Niagara Falls was dragged down by high taxes; cold, snowy weather and an above average crime rate.
The city did score well for affordability though. The median home value in Niagara Falls is just less than $65,000. That is well below the national median of $240,000.
Niagara Falls is not the only city in New York ranked on the list. Troy ranked as the number four worst city to retire.
The best ranked city to retire to was Arlington, Virginia. Several warm-weather states followed.
An analyst for Bankrate.com says smaller cities and suburbs rank the best. That is because most seniors want big-city amenities without the hustle, bustle and crime.
