NYS advises people to take boater safety courses after fatal accidents

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Many people are heading out to the dock to set sail as this time of year marks the unofficial start to summer.

Nearly half a million registered powerboats are in New York State. New York ranks ninth in the nation for registered boats.

According to the Parks Department, last year, 19 people were killed in boating accidents across New York State.

The state advises everyone to take boater safety courses, wear a life jacket and stay sober while out on the water.
